Talk:Ice spikes (3.5e Equipment)
+3 to total damage extra is a little extreme for 175gp. The maximum extra damage for this weapon is a lot (+12), which is the equivalent of having 2d6 roll max. That would mean that the price of this enhancement should at the very least be 4,000gp. Just my two copper. --Formicinae (talk) 13:14, 20 June 2012 (MDT)
- I'm not sure how to price this. The damage is 1d4x3, which ends up being 7.5 average damage (minimum 3), which is quite a bit better than 2d6. But ont he other hand, it seems kind of weird for a magical enhancement, and almost seems like a custom arrow. In which case, the price for 50 would be 8,750gp, but I don't know how to compare that to anything else. JazzMan 07:38, 8 July 2012 (MDT)
- I would personally make it cost the same as a weapon augment crystal of equal damage.--Formicinae (talk) 19:22, 10 July 2012 (MDT)
- There's no great comparison. The Lesser Crystal of Energy Assault (Cold) costs 3,000gp and deals 1d6 cold damage; the Greater version costs 6,000gp and reduces the targets speed by 10ft for one round, so it's hard to compare. The Witchlight Reservoir costs 5,000gp, and after you "prime" it, deals 2d6 damage or -2 to Will saves. But it only works 5 times every 8 hours, and only in very specific circumstances. The Lesser Crystal can only be put on a +1 or higher weapon, and the Greater Crystal and Reservoir can only be put on a +3 or higher weapon.
- So based on all that, this 8,000gp isn't that far off if you are going to have a set price, otherwise probably make it a +2; this would cost a minimum 16,000gp to add. Any of these changes would require a page move, though, because it's a magic item or weapon enhancement, not equipment. JazzMan 20:03, 10 July 2012 (MDT)
Balance
You addressed the idea that it should be an enhancement modifier but you haven't addressed power vs enhancement modifier. For example the epic level col bonus is 3d6 for a +3 modifier. This number is static but it doesn't add blanket bonus damage either as this thing does. In the current format since it ranges from 3-8 (1d6+1+1 (cold) to 4d6+4+4 (cold)) this is an issue. No other type of bonus comes close to this in terms of damage, especially for non epic weapons which causes severe problems. To give the simple example a bonus of d6 is 1 3d6 is 3. Even if you want to be extremely nice an absolute minimum would be 2 and even then you would have to make it limited to epic. A bonus modifier of 3 you might be able to contest based off the variable bonus but this sure isn't a +1 modifier per DnD standards. Tivanir (talk) 11:30, 4 April 2013 (MDT)
