Urodelian

Physical Description

Urodelians are short bipedal salamanders. They have moist skin, long tails, and stunted legs. They can be divided into two subgroups. The tree dwelling variant are usually vibrant colors like turquoise, neon green, fiery orange, and bright yellow. The water dwelling variant are usually darker colors like brown, grey, and black and have bright colored spots throughout their body.

History

Urodelians evolved from large jungle salamanders. Groups of these salamanders would return to the same spawning pool year after year and slowly began to group together to protect their eggs. Overtime these salamanders became bipedal and sentient and began to use tools to defend their pools.

Society

Most Urodelians live in villages. These villages are usually located in two locations, high in the trees or in caves protected by water. These villages are usually led by a respected elder known as a Newt Lord. Urodelians who live in these villages must provide for it either with food or craftsmanship. All Urodelians assist in public defense. It is common practice for Urodelians to where the skeletons of their ancestors as armor so even the dead can continue defending the tribe.

Every year they gather at their secret spawning pools to mate. Each spawning pool has a year long complement of 12 Spawn Guards. The guards are the most revered members of the Urodelian society. These guards have a natural affinity to nature and protect the eggs and tadpoles that are produced during spawning season. They are also responsible for passing on Urodelain history and teaching the newly spawned Urodelians.

There is a Urodelian language system that is a series of croaks and is largely based off a chemical pheromones they produce. Urodelians have a strong hatred for other jungle dwellers that prey upon them such as lizardfolk and Yuan-Ti. While Urodelians have had limited interaction with common races such as humans and elves, there are a few Urodelian communities in close proximity to human cities. These communities were form when human explorers carried away Urodelians to sell as exotic pets.
